Boundaries with women made gallery
April 15th - may 16th, 2021
In March of 2020, I had the pleasure of being invited to jury an exhibition with Woman Made Gallery under the theme “Boundaries”. What resulted was an exhibition that featured twenty-two women and non-binary artists who shared works commenting on the boundaries of the body, womanhood, motherhood, society, social norms and so much more. The show ran from April 15th - May 16th, 2021 in a physical and virtual exhibition. You can see photos of the exhibit below and all of the featured artwork on the Woman Made Gallery website HERE. In addition to jurying the exhibition, I was given the opportunity to develop show programming around the themes “Boundaries” to go along with the exhibition. From that idea I developed “The Boundaries Broadcast”, an anonymous messaging service where people were invited to call, text or e-mail in a boundary they wanted to set in their life. They were then encouraged to use that practice to put the boundary to use in the real world. The trailer and social imagery for the programming is below, all designed by me. Voiceover by Lauren S. Deaton.
The Woman Made Gallery team both streamed the voicemails over a speaker in the lobby of the exhibition and also printed copies of boundaries to be hung outside the exhibition, inviting guests to write and post their own throughout the month long opening. Examples of anonymous boundaries set for the project, below:
“I would like to set a boundary of not making things that are about other people about me and not taking personally things that clearly have nothing to do with me. ”
“I will not keep something that I do not want or like just because someone else gave it to me as a gift.”
“If if is not urgent, or if you are okay, could you message me in the daytime so I can prioritize rest and not get triggered?”
“I am okay holding space for you, and talking on a hard day, but I am not okay with you taking out your anger on me. ”
